Pilates Frequency Answer Questions

What is Pilates?

The Pilates approach is based on the original ideas of Jospeh Pilates who originally named his pioneering approach ‘contrology’.

During World War One Pilates worked as a nurse helping injured soldiers recover from their injuries.

Pilates later moved to the USA and opened a studio. It was here that he helped dancers from the New York School of Ballet with conditioning exercises and techniques to overcome dance related injuries.

The Contrology programme aimed to develop the complete co-ordination of mind, body and spirit in order to promote suppleness, muscular strength, endurance and good posture, with the aim of alleviating pain.

Over the years the method has evolved thanks to advances in anatomical knowledge, physiology, kinesiology and biometrics to become a scientifically sound approach to exercise and training.

However the original fundamentals of the training method still play a core role in Pilates today

What are the benefits of Pilates?

Pilates has a broad range of benefits covering fitness, emotional and mental health. These include:

– Improved posture

– Increased muscular tone, strength and endurance

– Increased core strength and stability

– Better balance

– Increased joint stability

– Reduction in stress

– Improved immune system

Do I need to be flexible?

No. We will work on increasing range of movement in some muscle groups during our classes but you absolutely do not need to be flexible in order to benefit from Pilates.

What do I need for a class?

Just yourself, a bottle of water and suitable clothing which is comfortable and easy to move in. Please feel free to bring your own mat or if you don’t have one just let me know and I can bring a spare.

What happens in a Pregnancy Pilates class?

During a Pregnancy Pilates class we will work all of the muscle group which we would in a regular class but include specific modifications to ensure that they are safe for all stages of pregnancy. Specific focus will be given to posture, the pelvic floor and strengthening exercises for key muscle groups. Classes include a longer warm up and a lovely relaxing section at the end. You will also get the opportunity to meet other local mums-to-be in a calm and welcoming space.
